Spanish Simple Future (Futuro Simple)

Mastering the Futuro Simple

The Futuro Simple (Simple Future) is one of the most useful and straightforward tenses in the Spanish language. Unlike other tenses that require complex stem changes or auxiliary verbs, the Simple Future is formed by adding a set of endings directly to the infinitive verb.

Most verbs in the future tense are regular.

To form the future tense, use the infinitive as the stem and add the following endings to the infinitive:

The endings are the same for all -ar, -er, and -ir verbs.

Notice that only the nosotros form does not carry a written accent.

How to Form the Futuro Simple

The beauty of the Simple Future is that the conjugation is the same for all three types of verbs (-AR, -ER, and -IR). You do not remove the ending of the infinitive; you keep the verb whole and attach the new ending.

The Endings

Here are the six endings you must memorize. Note that all endings have an accent mark except for the nosotros form.

PronounEndingExample: Hablar (To speak)Example: Comer (To eat)Example: Vivir (To live)
YoHablaréComeréViviré
-ásHablarásComerásVivirás
Él/Ella/UstedHablaráComeráVivirá
Nosotros/as-emosHablaremosComeremosViviremos
Vosotros/as-éisHablaréisComeréisViviréis
Ellos/Ellas/Ustedes-ánHablaránComeránVivirán

Key Rule:

Never drop the -ar, -er, or -ir.

  • Incorrect: Yo comé
  • Correct: Yo comeré

Irregular Verbs in the Future Tense

While the endings remain the same, some common verbs have irregular stems. You must memorize these stems, but you still attach the regular future endings listed above.

Here are the most common irregular stems:
